With point and shoot models overcrowding the market, Sony's new T2 is offering a feature that will certainly appeal to a large number of consumers. The Cybershot T2 has no less than 4GB of internal memory, more than most users will ever need. Regular point and shoot cameras have about 16MB or 32MB of internal memory, but Sony's T2 model probably sets a new record with the 4GB.
Moreover, the unit comes with an Album function for automatically indexing and arranging the images. The T2 has a Carl Zeiss 3x optical zoom lens and 8.1 megapixels of resolution, from this point of view, the unit being a classical point and shoot model. Moreover, the model comes with a large 2.7-inch Clear Photo touchscreen display.
In a way, it's a good thing that the T2 only has 8.1 megapixels, as opposed to the latest 12MP competitors, since small sensors in cameras such as this one have a better performance with fewer photosites.
On the other hand, the lens is not such a stellar display of advanced technology. The Carl Zeiss has a 3x optical zoom with a focal range of 38-114mm and a disappointing maximum aperture ranging from f/3.5 to f/4.3. It would have been nice to be able to open up the aperture to f/2.8, at least at the wide end.
This is compensated by Sony with the Super SteadyShot optical stabilization technology that allows for slower than recommended shutter speeds to be used.
Other features include Sharemark technology and Picture Motion Browser Portable software for easy blogging and web uploads, Full HD output and PhotoTV HD display mode, on-screen ‘scrapbook’ photo arrangements, an all-metal body and ISO ranges from 80 to 3200. Don't forget the slightly ridiculous "smile shutter", which "automatically detects and captures a person smiling without the need to press the shutter". Sony says that "if there are several people in the frame, you can select the primary subject for the camera to watch by touching the screen. A sequence of up to six smiling shots can be taken without the need to manually press the shutter."
The Cyber-shot T2 will be available starting December 2007 for around $350.
